Liberty is a venture from Wellington restauranteurs Steve Logan and Shaun Clouston. Their long-standing fine dining restaurant Logan Brown is a few doors down on Cuba Street.

As the name suggests, the food approach at Liberty is more casual. Made for sharing, the menu is intriguing and inspired by flavours from around the world. The unifying factor is that it’s all delicious. Like its big sister restaurant up the road, Liberty relies on the best and freshest seasonal ingredients from around Aotearoa.

The most challenging part of dining at Liberty is choosing what to eat. There are a couple of ways around this: you can go with a big group, which allows for ordering more plates and thus tasting more flavours. Or you can let the team “take the Liberty” and treat you to a tailored selection of the chef’s favourites. Smaller groups, couples and singles can catch up over oysters, ceviche and cocktails.

The drinks menu follows the restaurant’s brief of “a bit of here and there”. International varietals sit alongside homegrown drops. The cocktail list covers the classics, often with a twist (and a local liquor).

If you’re a people watcher, you’ll want to park up by the large street windows for a front-row seat to Cuba Street. Those who like to watch the kitchen in action can grab a bucket stool at the chef’s bar. With its sleek but comfortable fit-out, welcoming atmosphere, and delicious food and drink offerings, Liberty is a place you’ll want to stay for a while. And it encourages guests to take the liberty of doing so.
